ANKARA, Turkey – Turkey withdrew its ambassador to Israel and called for an emergency session of the U.N. Security Council as condemnations erupted across Europe and the Arab world Monday over Israel's deadly commando raid on ships taking humanitarian aid to the blockaded Gaza Strip.

Government after government demanded an explanation from Israel, which said its soldiers were trying to defend themselves against armed activists. The White House said it was trying to learn more about "this tragedy."

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said "it should be known that we are not going to remain silent in the face of this inhumane state terrorism." Most of the nine dead were apparently from Turkey, once a close ally of Israel.

In Istanbul, a crowd tried to storm the Israeli Consulate. North of Jerusalem, Palestinians hurled bottles and stones at Israeli soldiers. In Jordan, hundreds urged their government to follow Turkey's lead and cut ties with Israel. Dozens of Egyptians protested outside the foreign ministry in Cairo criticizing the Egyptian government holding pictures of late President Gamal Abdel Nasser.

Israel said the activists attacked its commandos as they boarded the six ships taking tons of supplies to Gaza, while the flotilla's organizers said the Israeli forces opened fire first.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the violence. The European Union's foreign affairs chief, Catherine Ashton, said the bloc was deeply concerned and she called on Israel to carry out an inquiry. British Foreign Secretary William Hague deplored the killings and called for an end to the Gaza blockade.

Greece, Egypt, Sweden, Spain and Denmark summoned Israel's ambassadors demanding explanations for the violence, with Spain and France condemning what they called the disproportionate use of force. Greece suspended a military exercise with Israel and postponed a visit by Israel's air force chief. Germany called for an immediate investigation but was careful not to directly place blame, and said it was seeking information on six German citizens believed to have been aboard the ships.(Picture: protest in Greece)

In Tehran, dozens of angry students pelted the U.N. offices with stones and eggs in protest, burning Israeli flags and chanting, "death to Israel" and "down with U.S." Police blocked them from reaching the building. The president of Iran, a key supporter of Hamas, called the raid "an inhuman act." In Baghdad, an estimated 3,000 Shiite followers of the anti-American cleric Muqtada al-Sadr shouted "Death, death to Israel!" and "Death, death to America!"

Riot police used tear gas to drive back hundreds of protesters demonstrating outside the Israeli Embassy in Paris. There were also demonstrations in Rome, Sweden, Norway, Cyprus and more than 20 cities in Greece.

In Athens, riot police used tear gas and stun grenades to disperse around 2,500 Greeks and Arabs protesting outside the Israeli Embassy. Some protesters threw stones and tried to push past police lines to reach the embassy. About 2,000 people demonstrated peacefully in Thessaloniki.

The African Union issued a statement to "strongly condemn" the raid and said it "complicates the existing situation and the effort to bring just, lasting and comprehensive peace to the area."

Abdel-Rahman al-Attiya, the head of the Gulf Cooperation Council, a regional group, said "Israel is a renegade entity that violates international law" and said the attack should be considered "a war crime."

In Saudi Arabia, which has promoted a wider Arab-Israeli peace proposal calling for a land-for-peace swap, the Cabinet headed by King Abdullah called on the international community to hold Israel responsible for its "barbaric" policies.

But the strongest reaction came from Turkey, where Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc said Turkey was canceling three joint military drills and calling on the U.N. Security Council to convene in an emergency session about Israel. Turkey is currently a member of the council.

He also said a Turkish youth soccer team currently in Israel would be brought home.

The raid also brought heightened attention to Israel's blockade of the Gaza Strip, imposed after the Palestinian militant group Hamas seized control of the tiny Mediterranean territory in 2007. The blockade — along with Israel's fierce offensive against Gaza in the winter of 2008-2009 to stop Hamas rocket fire on Israeli villages — has fueled anti-Israeli sentiment around the Arab world.

The Cairo-based Arab League called an emergency session for Tuesday to address the attack, as the two only Arab states with peace deals with Israel — Jordan and Egypt — sharply condemned the violence.

The incident also put Egypt in a tight position. The only Arab country bordering the Gaza Strip, it has helped enforce the blockade by cracking down on smuggling tunnels that are a key source of goods to Gaza's 1.5 million people and by rejecting pressure that it open its border crossing.

A group founded by Nelson Mandela that includes Nobel Peace Prize winner Desmond Tutu and former President Jimmy Carter said "the treatment of the people of Gaza is one of the world's greatest human rights violations and that the blockade is not only illegal, it is counterproductive."

In Beirut, about 500 Palestinian and Lebanese activists protested in front of the U.N. headquarters, setting Israeli flags on fire. In neighboring Syria, more than 200 Syrian and Palestinian protesters staged a sit-in before the offices of the United Nations.

দক্ষিণ আফ্রিকার উপ-স্বরাষ্ট্রমন্ত্রী মালুসি গিগাবা সে দেশে মোবাইল ফোন ও ইন্টারনেটে পর্নোচিত্র প্রদর্শন সম্পূর্ণ নিষিদ্ধ করার প্রস্তাব করেছেন। এ ব্যাপারে তিনি দেশটির আইন সংস্কার কমিশনের সঙ্গে যোগাযোগ করেছেন। কমিশনের কাছে তিনি জানতে চেয়েছেন, আইন পরিবর্তন করে পর্নোচিত্র প্রদর্শন নিষিদ্ধ করা যায় কি না।


মন্ত্রী গিগাবা জাস্টিস অ্যালায়েন্স ফর সাউথ আফ্রিকার (জেএএসএ) কর্মকর্তাদের সঙ্গেও কথা বলেছেন। পর্নোগ্রাফি নিষিদ্ধে বর্তমানে এ সংস্থাটি একটি খসড়া প্রস্তাব তৈরি করছে।

সামাজিক যোগাযোগের সবচেয়ে জনপ্রিয় ওয়েবসাইট ফেসবুক সাময়িক বন্ধ করে দিয়েছে Bangladesh সরকার। বাংলাদেশ টেলিযোগাযোগ নিয়ন্ত্রণ কমিশন (বিটিআরসি) গতকাল শনিবার বাংলাদেশ টেলিযোগাযোগ কোম্পানি লিমিটেড (বিটিসিএল) ও ম্যাংগো টেলি সার্ভিসেসকে চিঠি দিয়ে ফেসবুক সাময়িক বন্ধ রাখার নির্দেশ দিয়েছে। এ দুটি প্রতিষ্ঠানই আন্তর্জাতিক ইন্টারনেট গেটওয়ে। বিটিসিএল, ম্যাংগো ও ইন্টারনেট সেবাদাতাদের সংগঠন আইএসপি অ্যাসোসিয়েশন এ বিষয়টি নিশ্চিত করেছে।


জানতে চাইলে বিটিআরসির চেয়ারম্যান জিয়া আহমেদ প্রথম আলোকে বলেন, ধর্মীয় অনুভূতিতে আঘাত হানতে পারে এমন কিছু ব্যঙ্গচিত্র ও ছবি ফেসবুকে প্রকাশ করা হচ্ছিল। এসব ব্যঙ্গচিত্র যাতে প্রকাশ না হতে পারে, সে কারণে বিটিআরসি এর শাখা লিঙ্কগুলো বন্ধ করার চেষ্টা করছিল। কিন্তু এটা করতে না পারায় সরাসরি ফেসবুকই সাময়িক বন্ধ রাখতে নির্দেশ দেওয়া হয়েছে। আবার কবে ফেসবুক চালু করা হবে, জানতে চাইলে চেয়ারম্যান বলেন, শাখা লিঙ্কগুলো বন্ধ করার পর ফেসবুক খুলে দেওয়া হবে।

২০০৪ সাল থেকে ফেসবুক চালু করা হয়। বর্তমানে সারা বিশ্বে এর ব্যবহারকারী ৪০ কোটির বেশি। বাংলাদেশে নয় লাখ লোক ফেসবুক ব্যবহার করে।

যুবক গ্রেপ্তার: এদিকে ফেসবুকে প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা ও বিরোধীদলীয় নেত্রী খালেদা জিয়ার আপত্তিকর ছবি ও ব্যঙ্গাত্মক মন্তব্য প্রকাশ করার অভিযোগে মাহাবুব আলম (রডিন) নামের একজনকে গ্রেপ্তার করা হয়েছে। গতকাল শনিবার ভোরে পুরান ঢাকার ওয়ারীর র‌্যাংকিন স্ট্রিট এলাকা থেকে র‌্যাব-১০ ও গোয়েন্দা শাখার একটি যৌথ দল তাঁকে গ্রেপ্তার করে।

র‌্যাবের আইন ও জনসংযোগ শাখার পরিচালক কমান্ডার এম সোহায়েল জানান, কোনো রাজনৈতিক উদ্দেশ্য নিয়ে মাহাবুব এসব অপপ্রচার চালাচ্ছিলেন কি না, তা তদন্ত করা হচ্ছে। চার দিনের চেষ্টার পর তাঁকে গ্রেপ্তার করা হয় বলে তিনি জানান।

তবে মাহাবুব র‌্যাবকে জানান, মজা করার জন্য তিনি এমনটা করেছেন। তিনি এর আগে প্রধানমন্ত্রীর ছেলে সজীব ওয়াজেদ জয় সম্পর্কে ব্যঙ্গাত্মক ছবি ও মন্তব্য প্রকাশ করেছিলেন বলে র‌্যাবের কাছে স্বীকার করেন।

মাহাবুবকে গতকাল র‌্যাব সদর দপ্তরে সাংবাদিকদের সামনে হাজির করা হয়। তাঁর কাছ থেকে দুটি ল্যাপটপ, দুটি পাসপোর্ট, পর্নো সিডি ও ইমাম মেহেদীর সিডি জব্দ করেছে র‌্যাব।

র‌্যাবের যোগাযোগ শাখার পরিচালক কমান্ডার নাসরুল মোমেন সাইফুল্লাহ সাংবাদিকদের জানান, মাহাবুব পুরান ঢাকার র‌্যাংকিন স্ট্রিটের একটি বাসায় থাকেন। তাঁর বাবা দেলোয়ার হোসেন ইসলামপুরের একজন ধনাঢ্য কাপড় ব্যবসায়ী। উচ্চ মাধ্যমিক পাস করার পর তিনি আইসিএমে (ইনস্টিটিউট অব কস্ট অ্যান্ড ম্যানেজমেন্ট) ভর্তি হওয়ার চেষ্টা করে ব্যর্থ হন।

র‌্যাব জানায়, মাহাবুব এক সপ্তাহ আগে প্রধানমন্ত্রীর ছবি বিকৃত করে ফেসবুকে দেন। র‌্যাব জানতে পারে, ফেসবুকে তাঁর একাধিক অ্যাকাউন্ট আছে। এগুলো ভুয়া ঠিকানায় করা। তিনি কম্পিউটারে ওয়েবসাইট হ্যাকিং করার প্রযুক্তি জানেন বলে র‌্যাব কর্মকর্তা জানান।

Matador escapes death by the skin of his teeth after horrific goring in Madrid bullfight

The half-ton bull, called Opiparo, struck after Julio Aparicio lost his footing and stumbled while carrying out a pass with is red cape in a packed Las Ventas bullring.
One of the animal's horns tore into his throat and punched through the bottom of his mouth as the crowd screamed in horror at the bullfight last night.(22ND May)






The force of the impact lifted the matador into the air, puncturing his tongue and fracturing his jawbone, before the bull threw him to the sand.


Fellow matadors dashed to the rescue and managed to distract the bull so medics could get to Mr Aparicio.

The 41-year-old managed to struggle to his feet, but collapsed with blood pouring down his neck and had to be carried from the ring.

He had an emergency one-hour operation in the Las Ventas medical centre, before being transfered to the October 12 Hospital in Madrid, where doctors performed an emergency tracheotomy and worked to reconstruct his jaw, tongue and the roof of his mouth during a six-hour operation.
Mr Aparicio, from Seville, comes from a well-known family of matadors. He is in a grave condition in hospital.

দক্ষিণ এশীয় সাইবার গেমস প্রতিযোগিতায় ডোটা গেমে বাংলাদেশ চ্যাম্পিয়ন হয়েছে। গত রোববার ভারতের গোয়ায় অনুষ্ঠিত ফাইনালে ভারতকে হারিয়ে বাংলাদেশ এ শিরোপা যেতে। ‘দক্ষিণ এশীয় সাইবার গেমস চ্যাম্পিয়নশিপ’ নামের এ প্রতিযোগিতা গত শনিবার শেষ হওয়ার কথা থাকলেও গত রোববার ডোটা গেমটির চূড়ান্ত পর্ব অনুষ্ঠিত হয়েছে। গতকাল সোমবার বাংলাদেশ দলের ব্যবস্থাপক ইরফান হুসেন ই-মেইলে প্রথম আলোকে এ তথ্য জানান।


ডোটা গেমে বাংলাদেশ যে গ্রুপে ছিল, সেটিতে শ্রীলঙ্কার একটি ও ভারতের দুটি দল ছিল। বাংলাদেশ তিনটি খেলাতেই জয়ী হয়। এরপর ভারতের সঙ্গে ফাইনালে ডোটা গেমে চারটি ম্যাচ খেলে বাংলাদেশ। এর মধ্যে প্রথমটিতে জয়, দ্বিতীয়টিতে পরাজয় এবং শেষ ম্যাচে জয় দিয়ে চ্যাম্পিয়ন হয় বাংলাদেশ। দেশের বাইরে এই প্রথম সাইবার গেমসের একটি টুর্নামেন্টে বিজয়ী হলো বাংলাদেশ। তবে কাউন্টার স্ট্রাইক গেমে বাংলাদেশ কোনো সাফল্য পায়নি।

A News of the World reporter posed as a wealthy businessman looking for access to Andrew, who has served as the UK's special representative for international trade and investment since 2001. The reporter secretly filmed his financial negotiations with Fergie, who wanted 500,000 pounds for her services.

"Look after me and he'll look after you. . . you'll get it back tenfold. I can open any door you want," she told him.
The film shows her accepting 40,000 pounds as a down payment of sorts.

When asked how he'll get her the rest of the money, she tells him, "You send it to the bank account that I tell you to send it to."

With it all right there on film, Fergie had no other choice but to fess up.

"I very deeply regret the situation and the embarrassment caused," she said in a statement. "It is true that my financial situation is under stress, however, that is no excuse for a serious lapse in judgment and I am very sorry that this has happened."
She went on to clear Andrew of any involvement and said he "was not aware or involved in any of the discussions that occurred."

বাংলাদেশের লাল-সবুজ পতাকা উড়ল এভারেস্টের চূড়ায়। বাংলাদেশের যুবক মুসা ইব্রাহীম পৃথিবীর সর্বোচ্চ পর্বতশৃঙ্গ এভারেস্টের শিখরে পা রাখলেন গতকাল রোববার ২৩ মে নেপাল সময় সকাল সাড়ে আটটার দিকে। ৩০ বছর বয়সী মুসা ইব্রাহীমই একমাত্র বাংলাদেশি, যিনি এভারেস্ট জয় করলেন।


Musa, a sub-editor at The Daily Star, used the North Alpine route on the Tibetan side to conquer the top of the world, Anik Khan, a friend of the climber, told The Daily Star from Kathmandu in the evening. Mr. Ibrahim, of Thakurgaon district is the Founder & General Secretary of North Alpine Club Bangladesh, which is a mountaineering and adventure club established on October 29, 2007 with the goal to champion Mt. Everest by 2010.


He initiated his journey on April 8, 2010.

Besides Musa, three Montenegrins, six Britons, one American and a Serb are in the team.

ঈশ্বরী পাড়ওয়ালকে উদ্ধৃত করে কাঠমান্ডুতে বাংলাদেশের উপ-মিশনপ্রধান নাসরিন জাহান টেলিফোনে ও মেইল বার্তায় প্রথম আলোকে মুসা ইব্রাহীমের এভারেস্ট জয়ের তথ্য নিশ্চিত করেছেন। তিনি বলেন, মুসা প্রথমে ওয়্যারলেস রেডিও থেকে এভারেস্ট বেসক্যাম্পে খবরটি পাঠানোর ব্যবস্থা করেছিলেন। নাসরিন জাহান এই সাফল্যের খবরটি পররাষ্ট্র মন্ত্রণালয়কে জানিয়েছেন বলে জানান।

ঈশ্বরী পাড়ওয়াল প্রথম আলোকে জানান, মুসা আজ (সোমবার) সন্ধ্যার দিকে অগ্রবর্তী বেসক্যাম্পে ফিরে আসবেন। আগামীকাল তিনি মূল বেসক্যাম্পে ফিরবেন। তারপর তিব্বতিয়ান মাউন্টিয়ারিং অ্যাসোসিয়েশনের পক্ষ থেকে বিজয়ীদের সনদ দেওয়া হবে। এই সনদ পাওয়ার পরই মুসা ইব্রাহীম এভারেস্ট বিজয়ের আনুষ্ঠানিক স্বীকৃতি পাবেন। তার আগে এ ব্যাপারে আনুষ্ঠানিক ঘোষণা পাওয়া যাবে না।

মুসা ইব্রাহীমের অভিযান-সহযোগী মুক্তিনাথ ট্রাভেলসের কমল আরিয়াল কাঠমান্ডু থেকে সকালে মুসার স্ত্রী উম্মে সরাবন তহুরাকে ই-মেইলে সুখবরটা জানান। এরপরই মুসার এভারেস্ট বিজয়ের খবর ছড়িয়ে পড়ে। সামাজিক যোগাযোগের মাধ্যম ফেসবুক, বিভিন্ন ব্লগসহ গণমাধ্যমে খবরটি প্রচারিত হয়। এরপর রাতে বাংলাদেশ টেলিভিশনসহ বিভিন্ন বেসরকারি টিভি চ্যানেল, বিবিসি ও এবিসি রেডিওতেও বাংলাদেশের এভারেস্ট জয়ের খবরটি প্রচার করা হয়।

কমল আরিয়াল প্রথম আলোকে ই-মেইলে জানান, এভারেস্টে ওঠার পর মুসা ইব্রাহীম প্রথমে বেসক্যাম্পে বার্তা পাঠান। বেসক্যাম্প হিমালয়ান গাইডকে ওই বার্তা পৌঁছে দেয়। হিমালয়ান গাইড প্রথমেই সে বার্তা আরোহীর নিকটজনকে জানান।

প্রসঙ্গত, সব পর্বতারোহীর ক্ষেত্রেই এই প্রক্রিয়ায় প্রাথমিক তথ্য পাওয়া যায়। মুসা ইব্রাহীমের ক্ষেত্রেও এই প্রচলিত প্রক্রিয়ার ধারাবাহিকতা অক্ষুণ্ন ছিল। এভারেস্ট বিজয়ের ক্ষেত্রে বেসক্যাম্পই প্রাথমিক তথ্যের একমাত্র সূত্র। এরপর আরোহী নেমে এলে তথ্য-প্রমাণসহ তাঁর এভারেস্ট বিজয় নিশ্চিত করা হয়। বেসক্যাম্পে না পৌঁছানোয় গত রাত পর্যন্ত মুসা ইব্রাহীমের সঙ্গে কথা বলা বা তাঁর সরাসরি কোনো প্রতিক্রিয়া জানা সম্ভব হয়নি।

মুসা ইব্রাহীমের জন্ম ১৯৭৯ সালে লালমনিরহাটের মোগলহাটে। বাবা আনসার আলী, মা বিলকিস বেগম। তিনি ঠাকুরগাঁওয়ে মাধ্যমিক ও উচ্চমাধ্যমিক শিক্ষা শেষে ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের শিক্ষা ও গবেষণা ইনস্টিটিউট থেকে মাস্টার্স করেন। তিনি ব্র্যাক বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকেও মাস্টার্স করেন।

মুসা দীর্ঘদিন প্রথম আলোয় সাংবাদিকতা করেন। বর্তমানে তিনি ডেইলি স্টার-এ সহসম্পাদক হিসেবে কর্মরত।

২০০২ সালে অন্নপূর্ণা ট্রেইলে অভিযানের মধ্য দিয়ে মুসা স্বপ্নপূরণের পথে অগ্রসর হন। সেবার উঠেছিলেন ১২ হাজার ৪৬৪ ফুট। এরপর তিনি একটার পর একটা পর্বতারোহণ প্রশিক্ষণ ও অভিযানে অংশ নিতে থাকেন। তিনি হিমালয়ান মাউন্টেনিয়ারিং ইনস্টিটিউট থেকে দুই দফায় গত ছয় বছরে দুটো পেশাদারি পর্বতারোহণের প্রশিক্ষণ নেন। গত বছর জুনে তিনি ও তাঁর সহযোগী তৌহিদ হোসেন অন্নপূর্ণা-৪-এর শিখর জয় করেন প্রথম বাংলাদেশি হিসেবে।

মুসা ইব্রাহীমের স্ত্রী উম্মে সরাবন তহুরা দীর্ঘদিন প্রথম আলোয় সাংবাদিকতা করেছেন। বর্তমানে তিনি ময়মনসিংহে জেলা আদালতের সহকারী জজ। তাঁদের একমাত্র সন্তান ওয়াসি ইব্রাহীমের বয়স দেড় বছর।

'Artificial life' breakthrough announced by scientists

The synthetic cell looks identical to the 'wild type' Scientists in the US have succeeded in developing the first living cell to be controlled entirely by synthetic DNA.

The researchers constructed a bacterium's "genetic software" and transplanted it into a host cell.



The resulting microbe then looked and behaved like the species "dictated" by the synthetic DNA.

The advance, published in Science, has been hailed as a scientific landmark, but critics say there are dangers posed by synthetic organisms.

Some also suggest that the potential benefits of the technology have been over-stated.

But the researchers hope eventually to design bacterial cells that will produce medicines and fuels and even absorb greenhouse gases.

The team was led by Dr Craig Venter of the J Craig Venter Institute (JCVI) in Maryland and California.

He and his colleagues had previously made a synthetic bacterial genome, and transplanted the genome of one bacterium into another.

Now, the scientists have put both methods together, to create what they call a "synthetic cell", although only its genome is truly synthetic.

Dr Venter likened the advance to making new software for the cell.

The researchers copied an existing bacterial genome. They sequenced its genetic code and then used "synthesis machines" to chemically construct a copy.

How a synthetic cell was created:

The scientists "decoded" the chromosome of an existing bacterial cell - using a computer to read each of the letters of genetic code.

They copied this code and chemically constructed a new synthetic chromosome, piecing together blocks of DNA.

The team inserted this chromosome into a bacterial cell which replicated itself. Synthetic bacteria might be used to make new fuels and drugs.
BACK 1 of 3 NEXT Dr Venter told BBC News: "We've now been able to take our synthetic chromosome and transplant it into a recipient cell - a different organism.

"As soon as this new software goes into the cell, the cell reads [it] and converts into the species specified in that genetic code."

The new bacteria replicated over a billion times, producing copies that contained and were controlled by the constructed, synthetic DNA.

"This is the first time any synthetic DNA has been in complete control of a cell," said Dr Venter.

'New industrial revolution'
Dr Venter and his colleagues hope eventually to design and build new bacteria that will perform useful functions.

"I think they're going to potentially create a new industrial revolution," he said.

"If we can really get cells to do the production that we want, they could help wean us off oil and reverse some of the damage to the environment by capturing carbon dioxide."

Dr Venter and his colleagues are already collaborating with pharmaceutical and fuel companies to design and develop chromosomes for bacteria that would produce useful fuels and new vaccines.

But critics say that the potential benefits of synthetic organisms have been overstated.

Dr Helen Wallace from Genewatch UK, an organisation that monitors developments in genetic technologies, told BBC News that synthetic bacteria could be dangerous.

"If you release new organisms into the environment, you can do more harm than good," she said.

"By releasing them into areas of pollution, [with the aim of cleaning it up], you're actually releasing a new kind of pollution.

"We don't know how these organisms will behave in the environment."

Dr Wallace accused Dr Venter of playing down the potential drawbacks.

"He isn't God," she said, "he's actually being very human; trying to get money invested in his technology and avoid regulation that would restrict its use."

But Dr Venter said that he was "driving the discussions" about the regulations governing this relatively new scientific field and about the ethical implications of the work.

He said: "In 2003, when we made the first synthetic virus, it underwent an extensive ethical review that went all the way up to the level of the White House.

"And there have been extensive reviews including from the National Academy of Sciences, which has done a comprehensive report on this new field.

"We think these are important issues and we urge continued discussion that we want to take part in."

Ethical discussions

Dr Gos Micklem, a geneticist from the University of Cambridge, said that the advance was "undoubtedly a landmark" study.

But, he said, "there is already a wealth of simple, cheap, powerful and mature techniques for genetically engineering a range of organisms. Therefore, for the time being, this approach is unlikely to supplant existing methods for genetic engineering".

The ethical discussions surrounding the creation of synthetic or artificial life are set to continue.

Professor Julian Savulescu, from the Oxford Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics at the University of Oxford, said the potential of this science was "in the far future, but real and significant".

"But the risks are also unparalleled," he continued. "We need new standards of safety evaluation for this kind of radical research and protections from military or terrorist misuse and abuse.

"These could be used in the future to make the most powerful bioweapons imaginable. The challenge is to eat the fruit without the worm."

The advance did not pose a danger in the form of bio-terrorism, Dr Venter said.

"That was reviewed extensively in the US in a report from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a Washington defence think tank, indicating that there were very small new dangers from this.

"Most people are in agreement that there is a slight increase in the potential for harm. But there's an exponential increase in the potential benefit to society," he told BBC's Newsnight.

"The flu vaccine you'll get next year could be developed by these processes," he added.

Refrigerator-size nuclear reactors can power small towns

When most people think of nuclear power plants, visions of huge complexes like Three Mile Island come to mind. Now companies are rushing to develop a new generation of refrigerator-size nuclear reactors to help meet the world's growing demand for electricity.


John Deal, chief executive officer of Hyperion Power Generation, intends to apply for a license "within a year" for units that would power a small factory or towns too remote to be connected to traditional electricity grids. The Santa Fe-based company, as well as Japan's Toshiba, are vying for a head start over traditional reactor makers General Electric (GE) and Areva in downsizing nuclear technology.

While large-scale nuclear plants now under way cost an average of $6.2 billion and will generate multiple gigawatts of power, Hyperion's price tag is $50 million for a 25-megawatt reactor, more comparable in cost to diesel generators or wind farms. Transportable by truck, the units would come in a sealed box and require less maintenance than a fossil fuel plant. Developers say they'd cost 15 percent less per megawatt of capacity than the full-scale atomic reactors now on the drawing board, according to World Nuclear Assn. data. "A 25Mw plant would put electricity into 20,000 homes, and it would fit inside this room," says James Kohlhaas, vice-president at a Lockheed Martin (LMT) unit that builds power systems for remote military bases. "It's a pretty elegant micro-grid solution."

So far, no manufacturer has sought certification for any small reactor, according to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Formal approvals would likely take three to five years, the same as for bigger reactors, says Scott Burnell, a commission spokesman.

Environmentalists are concerned that small reactors would pose the same risk of leaking radioactive materials as their larger counterparts, says Jan Beránek, nuclear energy project leader at Greenpeace International in Amsterdam. "Terrorists could hijack a reactor and directly use it to cause a meltdown or use it to fabricate fissile materials for later use in a weapon," Beránek says.

'Draw Muhammad Day': Pakistan bans YouTube; Facebook still blocked

As the Facebook-ignited campaign "Everybody Draw Muhammad Day" arrived today, Pakistan expanded its Internet ban to include YouTube.

A day after ordering that Facebook be blocked, the government also banned the video-sharing site, citing its "growing sacrilegious content," reports The Washington Post's Karin Brulliard from Islamabad.

A Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) says the decision to block YouTube was made after government monitors discovered that references to the primary "Everybody Draw Mohammed Day!" Facebook page -- which now has more than 80,000 "supporters" -- were growing on the video-sharing site.

The page, which Jon Wellington told Comic Riffs he started in a "whimsical and nonjudgmental spirit" last month, quickly became a forum for a hate-laced war of word and image, as both pro-Muslim and anti-Muslim posters often spewed vitriol.

The campaign also spawned an "Against Everybody Draw Mohammed Day" page, which as of Thursday has nearly 100,000 supporters who "like" the page. Molly Norris, the Seattle cartoonist whose posterlike illustration titled "Everybody Draw Mohammed Day!" last month spawned the protest, has herself joined the "Against" page.

"I will not be drawing Mohammed on May 20," Norris told Comic Riffs on Wednesday. "I joined 'Against Everybody Draw Mohammed Day' and folks from there write to me. I never even set up a place where people could send images to. Other people started Facebook pages for this day but I never did."

Islam is the majority religion in Pakistan. Some Muslims consider any depiction of Muhammad to be blasphemous.

"We are an Islamic republic, so we are monitoring the Muslim content," said the PTA spokesman, Khurran Mehran.

The Post's Brulliard reports that Wikipedia also seems to be blocked today in Pakistan -- though it wasn't immediately known whether this was because the government banned access. The cellphone company Mobilink said access from smartphones to Facebook, YouTube and other sites with "blasphemous content" were also blocked.

Shortly after 9 a.m. ET, a status update on the primary "Everybody Draw Muhammad" Facebook page said: "We are back online after some page trouble, thank you facebook-gang. Enjoy the rest of the day and draw Mohammed however you may like. We will of course encourage you to make a creative and humourous picture, instead of something hateful."

(CBS) A new iVillage survey of wives aged 18-49 reveals that sex in married life takes a little bit of a hit. Surprised?

Two thousand American wives between the ages of 18 and 49 were surveyed about their sex lives by iVillage. The most alarming finding was that 77 percent reported being "somewhat to extremely happy" with their sex life, but 63 percent of them would rather sleep, watch a movie or read than have sex.

More than half of surveyed women have used products to enhance sex with their spouse, whether it’s lubricant (41 percent), a vibrator (25 percent), adult toys (17 percent) or arousal gel (17 percent). Next time you need a boost in the bedroom, introduce a prop to get things going.

Bed, bath or beyond? Location wins as the most predictable part of a couple’s sex life (70 percent of women know precisely where trysts will take place), especially among moms with two or more kids. More than half of women can also predict the details, down to the time of day, positions and length of time it takes to get the deed done. One in five women can even calculate what day of the week things will get steamy, while 46 percent are able to forecast foreplay.

62 percent of women said they fantasize about having sex with someone other than their husband.

Lone thief steals $613 million-worth of art

PARIS - A lone thief stole five paintings worth up to half a billion euros ($613 million) in total, including major works by Picasso and Matisse, in a brazen overnight heist Thursday from a Paris modern art museum, police and prosecutors said.

The paintings were reported missing early Thursday from the Paris Museum of Modern Art, across the Seine River from the Eiffel Tower, according to Paris police. Investigators have cordoned off the museum, in one of the French capital's most tourist-frequented neighborhoods.

A single masked intruder was caught on a video surveillance camera taking the paintings away, according to the Paris prosecutor's office. The intruder entered by cutting a padlock on a gate and breaking a museum window, it said.

Their collective worth is estimated at as much as euro500 million.

The stolen works were "Le pigeon aux petits-pois" (The Pigeon with the Peas), an ochre and brown Cubist oil painting by Pablo Picasso; "La Pastorale" (Pastoral), an oil painting of nudes on hillside by Henri Matisse; "L'olivier pres de l'Estaque" (Olive Tree near Estaque) by Georges Braque; "La femme a l'eventail" (Woman with a Fan) by Amedeo Modigliani; and "Nature-mort aux chandeliers" (Still Life with Chandeliers) by Fernand Leger.

Red-and-white tape surrounded the museum, where investigators were studying surveillance video. Paper signs on the museum doors said it was closed for technical reasons.

On a cordoned-off balcony behind the museum, police in blue gloves and face masks examined the broken window and empty frames. The paintings appeared to have been carefully removed from the dissembled frames, not sliced out.

১৬ জুলাই ফারুকী-তিশার বিয়ে

পাঁচ বছর প্রেমের পর বিয়ে করতে যাচ্ছেন নির্মাতা মোস্তফা সরয়ার ফারুকী ও অভিনয়শিল্পী তিশা। গতকাল বুধবার মানিকগঞ্জের সাটুরিয়ায় কাজীবাড়ি শুটিং স্পটে এ দুই তারকা প্রথম আলোর কাছে তাঁদের বিয়ের কথা ঘোষণা দেন। ঢাকার পাঁচতারা হোটেল ওয়েস্টিনে তাঁদের বিয়ের অনুষ্ঠান হবে। এখন চলছে এর আয়োজনের প্রস্তুতি।


তিশা জানিয়েছেন, ১৬ জুলাই তাঁর বড় ভাইয়ের প্রথম বিবাহবার্ষিকী। তাই এ দিনকে তিনি ও ফারুকী তাঁদের বিয়ের জন্য বেছে নিয়েছেন। তাঁরা জানান, তাঁদের বিয়ের কেনাকাটা করা হবে দুবাই, ব্যাংকক ও কলকাতায়। বিয়ের তারিখ চূড়ান্ত করেছেন ফারুকি ও তিশার পরিবারের অভিভাবকেরা। এরই মধ্যে ফারুকী বনানীতে একটি নতুন ফ্ল্যাট কিনেছেন এবং তিশাকে নিয়ে তা সাজিয়েছেন।

বিয়ের অনুভূতি জানতে চাইলে ফারুকী মজা করে বললেন, ‘সিংহ প্রজাতি থেকে আমি ইঁদুর প্রজাতিতে রূপ নিতে যাচ্ছি।’ ফারুকির এ মন্তব্যের প্রতিবাদ করেন তিশা, ‘আমার স্বামী বিয়ের পরও সিংহ হয়েই থাকবে। কারণ আমি চাই, এখন ও যেভাবে কাজকর্ম করছে, বিয়ের পরও সেভাবেই চালিয়ে যাবে।’

ফারুকী সমর্থন করলেন তিশাকে। বললেন, তিশাও বিয়ের পর তাঁর কাজ এখনকার মতোই চালিয়ে যাবেন।

কে আগে ভালোবাসার কথা বলেছিলেন, জানতে চাইলে ফারুকী বললেন, ‘আমি প্রথম তিশাকে আমার ভালো লাগার কথা জানিয়েছিলাম।’ ২০০৫ সালের ৩১ অক্টোবর এক শুটিংয়ে তিশাকে ভালো লাগার কথা বললে তিশাও তাঁর ভালোবাসার কথা ফারুকীকে জানান।
